Spaced Repetition - The Leitner Box System

The Leitner Box System was first introduced by Sebastian Leitner in the 1970's. It utilizes up to 5 boxes, although current study techniques, recommend repetition cycles that go up to 7 times for complete mastery.

STUDY HELP >>>The Leitner System (using flash cards for review)**<---Please click to view link.
What is the "Leitner System"? >>>The Leitner System (explained) <---Please click to view link.

Awesome video by Thomas Frank: >>>>>The Most Powerful Way to Remember What You Study (See image from video below.) <---Please click to view link.

The "Modified Leitner Box System" can be used with some practical tools such as a mini-loaf tin, snack containers, and soap boxes. I've used dollar store $1.50 hinged boxes like the one below, after using the loaf tin to separate the cards over a period of days and weeks. You can use the Leitner system up to "Box 7" for maximum efficiency in learning.

The dollar store hinged box, uses simple toilet paper rolls,
which can be cut to the necessary size, to prop up the cards so they don't fall over. "Sistema" food containers, sold at Staples are useful to store cards using a "Modified Leitner Box System".

Some sample containers that are suitable to store flashcards are pictured below. Bar soap containers from the dollar store and mini 1.3 cup Rubbermaid containers, will hold the blank business card sized flashcards perfectly!!

The 0.3L
"Really Useful Utility Box" will fit the half-sized recipe cards perfectly!! They are transparent, so you can see the cards inside!

The most cost-effective system is pictured below. You can simply cut the blank recipe cards in half (see folded card inside box below, ready to cut). These cut cards will fit perfectly inside this 0.3 L "Really Useful Utility Box" that is pictured above and below. I bought mine at Staples. <---Click
NOTE: These useful little boxes will fit the business card size flashcards AND the half-sized recipe cards.

If you use the basic white soap boxes to put the business card size flash cards in, you can label them with different dry erase markers. One of my students suggested this idea, so here it is for you to see!:)

~ You can get creative in finding out ways to organize and store your cards!! ~

Using Flashcards to Study

Flashcards are extremely helpful to use in studying. They can be used in any subject. Index cards are the least costly option and can be cut in half, or into quarters to use for studying. Use one side to write the word and the flip side for writing the definition in your own words. Flashcards can be colour coded for different subjects or units. Here are some helpful websites for using flashcards:

Crash Course

Crash Course - is a YouTube channel hosted by the Green brothers, Hank and John. Crash Course began in December of 2011 and as of May 26th of this year, has over 6 million subscribers.

Crash Course has now partnered with Khan Academy. ----->  Partner Content
It's "Table of Contents" is available at:  ----> Crash Course - Table of Contents

Since Crash Course moves at such a quick speed, our students have found viewing the videos at a reduced speed of 0.75 was really quite normal! If you click on the "CC" or the "gear" at the bottom right hand corner of the screen, you can turn on English subtitles, and reduce the speed of the videos.

How to Succeed in High School

This morning we were privileged to have Jayden (SWCHS 2016) and John (WCHS 2016) present their motivational Power Point presentations to various grade 7, 8 and 9 classes. Their focus was on succeeding in high school, living a balanced life while attending high school, and steps to applying for a good university.  Their advice was extremely helpful and informative!

Jayden's Presentation <------ is available at this link. Hopefully these two students have inspired you to work hard to achieve your goals, but find balance at the same time!

One of the topics both Jayden and John discussed, was turning off social media and focusing on studying. Ways to do this is to find an app that will control your social media apps, or simply turn your cell phone or computer off, or on "airplane mode" while you are studying.

Turning off social media is like "putting blinders on" so that you can focus AND study!

Khan Academy - free online tutorials with exercises

If you are not familiar with "Khan Academy" yet, you may find it useful to check it out. I've included a few articles and YouTube videos about Khan Academy and it's founder, Salman Khan. The videos are free and easy to download to view later in a non-wifi zone, or to conserve the data usage on your phone or electronic device. Students have found it particularly helpful to watch the videos while riding the bus or LRT and have enjoyed "uninterrupted" videos, if downloaded while in a wifi zone and saved on their devices to view enroute to school or home. These videos are excellent summaries of topics that may be coming up in Math or Science classes, or have already been covered or will be taught soon. The app can be downloaded in less than a minute, which is particularly helpful for review of units covered in class.

Say "NO" to Social Media Challenge

There are numerous apps competing for our daily attention.

Our students want to "finish strong" and complete their school year with the best performance they can all muster up.

>>> Are you willing to join our challenge to "Say NO to Social Media"?!  <<<

Our Say "NO" to Social Media Challenge
  • We are committed to deleting social media apps off our phones from Monday to Friday (inclusive).
  • We have agreed to limit our time to social media, to only ONE hour total on the weekends.
  • These apps and websites include: Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram and others.
  • We will set timers to be accountable to our one hour limit. (Example: This will work out to a maximum time allotment such as 30 minutes on Saturday and 30 minutes on Sunday.)
  • We realize that wasting time on social media, is robbing us of our futures.
  • We want to make a positive difference in this world and build a brighter future by investing time in our education.
We are replacing the social media websites with educational apps that will teach us and inspire us and provide greater opportunities to us. These apps will help to build a better future for us. (Examples: IXL, Khan Academy, & Mathletics, to name a few!!)

Please join us in our challenge!!
